Medicine Buddha or Bhaisajyaguru is the Buddha of healing and medicine in Mahayana Buddhism; he cures sufferings and pains using the medicines of his teaching. The sculpture shown here is a bit different from his iconography of having a dark blue (Lapis Lazuli) colored body. He sits in the usual lotus posture (Dhyana asana) with the back side of both the feet facing upwards and eyes closed a gesture of him reminiscing the journey to enlightenment to be retold to his disciples. Buddhists recite the mantra and name of Medicine Buddha to overcome mental, physical and spiritual problems.

Bhaisajyaguru holds a decorated jar of medicine in his left hand and its stability symbolizes his meditativeness. Right hand resting on his right knee carries the stem of Aruna fruit or Myrobalan decorated here in alluring white reconstituted stones bordered with the blue ones, between his thumb and forefinger. He made 12 great vows while in his journey to achieve enlightenment and was attended by two Bodhisattvas in the land of Viduryanirbhasa symbolizing light of the sun (Suryaprabha) and light of the moon (Candraprabha) respectively.

Apart from this sculpture’s spiritual aspects, focus on the aesthetic values which the sculptor has highlighted with the use of inlayed work of blue and white reconstituted stones. He wears a Lapis Lazuli robe having a similar shade beaded border and is decorated by large interconnected white flowers. His blue hair and accurate structure make this a must have masterpiece to spread positivity in the house.
