Saraswati Seated on Double Lotus Base Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai
Saraswati Seated on Double Lotus Base Panchaloha Bronze Statue

A superfine Saraswati murti, sculpted from panchaloha. Panchaloha is a unique bronze made of five (‘pancha’) different iron-based (‘loha’) alloys. The metal casting method used to work with it is called madhuchista vidhana, an Agamic term for a technique that is now known as the lost wax method.

This Saraswati Mata murti depicts her in lalitasana on a narrow-cut lotus-petal throne. Her limbs are long and slender, the pleats of her dhoti gathered realistically over those. The rest of her is in perfect symmetry with her veena, the signature musical instrument of the Saraswati Bronze Statue- a lissome beauty, from which pours forth a musical grace.

From the characteristic metallic color with overtones of coppery green to the sheer wealth of detail in this Saraswati sculpture’s form and shringar, this Saraswati Puja murti bears all the hallmarks of authentic Swamimalai workmanship. Zoom in on the richly engraved crown and the expressive composure of countenance to appreciate the same.

Sthanak Lord Vishnu Madhuchista Vidhana Lost-Wax Panchaloha Bronze from Swamimalai

According to the Siddhartha-Samhita, there are twenty-four avatars of Lord Vishnu . The Trimurti is a concept in Hinduism in which the cosmic functions of creation, maintenance, and destruction are personified by Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer or transformer. His four arms indicate his all-powerful and all-pervasive nature. The conch ( Panchajanya) symbolizes that Vishnu is the Divine sound of creation and continuity. The Chakra, "Sudarshana", symbolizes the purified spiritualized mind and represents the destruction of the ego. A mace or Gada, "Kaumodaki" symbolizes that Vishnu's divine power is the source of all spiritual, mental, and physical strength. Shivakamasundari- Parvati as the Beloved of Shiva - Large Brass Statue with Inlay work

In the Shiva shrines of South India, the wife of Mahadeva Shiva-Parvati resides as Shivakamasundari Parvati – the beautiful woman who is the sole focus of Shiva’s passionate love. Resonating with her descriptions in the Hindu textual traditions,  Devi Parvati  in her sculptures appears as a divine amalgamation of yoga (spiritual attainment) and  Bhoga  (material fulfilments).  Maa Parvati’s standing images, similar to the brass statue we have here, are often related to her role as the prime audience to Shiva’s transcendental dance- Tandava. She remains gracefully poised and still as Shiva moves, enriched by the Shakti (energy) that is provided by Parvati herself. Enriching the actions of Shiva, enjoying marital bliss with Him in his presence, and meditating upon Him in his absence, becoming Uma for Maheswar (Shiva) when the world order requires the divine couple to procreate and becoming Kali when the universe needs them to wreak havoc, - Parvati is the...
